We are learning about the animals and insects that live at our school.

We will discover which creatures have made our playground their habitat.

We are going to create a zoo at school!

You will need:

  • two partners
  • observant eyes
  • paperladybird
  • a pencil
  • a hula hoop for your group, and
  • something to lean on

tools

Let’s get started…

We will go outside into the schoolyard and find a good place to set up our zoo. We will use the hula hoop as the walls of our zoo. Then we can record how many animals and insects we can see moving around in our zoo.

This is what we discovered….in our own words…

  • We saw ants
  • We saw all kinds of bugs
  • We saw a brown moth
  • We saw lots of ants
  • It was really fun looking for insects in the sandpit and the green grass.
  • We had fun at our zoo and we saw lots of insects and we saw a lot of ants. Our zoo was up near the fence in the dirt and the grass.
  • It was exciting looking for insects, it was the best zoo. We called it St Albans Zoo.

Check in time….why are we blogging?

Every now and then it’s good to check in and remind ourselves why we are moving down the path of class blogging and visit some blogs to gather new ideas for blog posts. Recently I read a blog post from Educators Technology that outlined 8 reasons why you should create a blog for your class. This post succinctly outlined some valid reasons for class blogging.

These blogs might provide some inspiration to reinvigorate our class blogs…

owlDuring this lesson, we will discuss and learn about….

  • information that should not be posted online
  • where to seek assistance if things go wrong online
  • the difference between sensible and risky online behaviour.

Let’s Chat…

  • How many of you have a smartphone?
  • How do you mainly use your smartphone?
  • How many of you use instant messaging?
  • Does anyone contribute to a website or Blog?
  • Does anyone play online games, for example, Clash of Clans, Minecraft, Call of Duty or use filesharing sites for music, games, ringtones, etc
  • How many of you have talked to people online that you have not met in person?
  • What is your favourite thing to do on your smartphone, tablet or other online device?
  • Does anyone access the internet with their TV?

  • Has anyone helped someone that has been cyberbullied?

Now, let’s watch this Cybersmart Detectives Video….

Mathica’s Mathshop – All Star Elf

mathica's mathshop heading

Good morning year one and two.

Today we are going to visit the Land of Tales and learn about measuring and graphing from the Mathmagician’s helper, Mathica. Here is what we will learn….

owl

Learning Intention:

Today we are learning to,

  • estimate how far we can step
  • collect data about how far we can step
  • measure to check our estimates
  • show how far we stepped on a bar graph
transparent green tick

Success Criteria:

I can:

  • make good estimates about how far I can step
  • measure how far I stepped
  • record how far I stepped on a bar graph
  • explain what I did and what I learnt

First we need to watch this episode of Mathica’s Mathshop.

I think you will enjoy it.

It is called All Star Elf and is about the annual sports day in the Land of Tales.

What math problems did you see Mathica solve on today’s show?

  • Mathica was measuring how high everyone jumped [Natasha]
  • Mathica measured how much water the animals could carry [Tommy]
  • Mathica measured how tall the candlestick was [Sam]
  • Mathica was measuring the candlestick with her hands [Supolu and Kaylah]

Do you remember the candlestick jumping competition?

Today we will have a competition to see who can make the longest steps.

We will go outside and you will work with a partner to guess and then measure who can take the longest steps. We will use our feet to measure the length of our giant steps.

You will need:

  • a partner
  • chalk
  • a graph sheet
  • a pencil
  • coloured pencils

tools

What math problems did you solve today?

  • We drew a line and then see how far we could step [Maretu]
  • So if you had chalk and the other person had to step and then they stop and then you measure it and step to the line and then you colour it in for how many steps you took [Natasha]
  • Measuring our foot and we watched Mathica’s Mathshop [Tommy]
  • We put on the screen how to measure and then we went outside to copy it on the floor [Jagan]
  • The movie was really good and the shop was good and the rabbit lost the challenge.[Christina]

‘Back to the Future’ Day

Today is ‘Back to the Future Day”…………..the day when Marty McFly and The Doc visit the future, from 1985,  in their Delorean car time machine.

This clip shows how their trip to the future unfolded in the movie….

Imagine…

That you have built a time machine and can move forward 30 years. What will you see in the world of 2045?

Consider these things and draw a picture of what you imagine life will be like.

Why do you think this might happen? What supports your idea that the future will look this way?

Add your supporting arguments to your picture.
